So 2000s It Hurts: Connection Before the Algorithm [Simply Platonish Book Reading and Author Q&A] In-Person
Not quite love. Not quite friendship. Not quite sure.
Join Professor Patricia Morency from the Department of Social Sciences for a 2000s-inspired afternoon of storytelling drawn from Simply Platonish, a sharp and tender exploration of what happens when a virtual college reunion reopens old questions. When Pia discovers that her two closest college friends are now married—to each other—she’s forced to revisit the blurry space between platonic and romantic, and the feelings she never fully named.
Through a sample reading and audience Q&A, this event reflects on early-2000s college life, interracial friendship dynamics, first-gen identity, and the messy process of belonging—before the algorithm, before the language, and before we quite knew who we were.
Whether you lived through the early 2000s or are discovering its cultural echoes for the first time, this conversation invites all generations to reconsider how we define connection.
